  Dear %%First Name%%
Corporate & commercial law firm Lowndes Associates has provided patent and trade mark services as part of their service offering for many years. In response to the growth of this work, we have launched a separate firm - Lowndes Associates Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys.

Global Move to Specialisation
Patent and trade mark attorneys are members of a separate profession in New Zealand. By creating a distinct patent and trade mark firm, Lowndes is reflecting a global trend towards increased specialisation. The new firm promises to help New Zealand businesses better target their IP expenditure and leverage IP to generate additional revenue sources.

Clients will continue to benefit from the patent and trade mark attorneys’ close collaboration with the law firm’s IP, technology, media and telecommunications lawyers. There is also ready access to the law firm’s broad-ranging corporate, commercial and litigation legal expertise.

Highly Experienced Leader
Lowndes Associates Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys is led by Leonard Cousins. Leonard has a unique and innovative approach to IP that stems from experience in tier-one patent and trade mark firms in Australasia and Europe; from working within a multi-national technology leader, Nortel Networks; and from working in a large-scale San Francisco-based start-up, Redfern Broadband Networks.

Leonard’s key focus is on helping NZ and Australian businesses to get more value from their IP spend. He believes that IP expenditure in NZ is often poorly directed and that the IP service procurement process can be overly time-consuming and arduous.

“I think many managers want to improve their knowledge of how IP can be used as a strategic tool to help position their businesses, manage economic opportunities and threats, and stimulate thinking for creative staff. The optimal approach involves up-skilling of management in the effective strategic use and good implementation of IP tools, as well as the development of detailed business processes or IP. Businesses need to ensure that the commercial advantages of technologies, brands, designs and content are properly protected for the appropriate commercial context, which will likely be dynamic once the economy recovers.”

Unique Client Workshop
A special point-of-difference for Lowndes Associates Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys is an intensive ‘experiential’ one-day workshop, which allows clients to develop knowledge and intuitive understanding of IP and to apply their new learning to the bottom line of a business.

The workshop involves a small group of participants engaged in a competitive exercise, with coaching and tutoring provided by an experienced registered patent attorney.

Broad Service Offering
In putting together the firm’s service offering, Leonard Cousins has drawn on his experience of how the technology companies he has worked in harvested IP, decided budgets, made decisions on protecting given technologies, designs and brands, and procured IP services. Few patent attorneys in New Zealand can match that experience with IP business processes.

One area of specialty is the protection of software and business models in Europe and the US. Lowndes Associates Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys has recent experience in both locations, in Japan and in many other countries.

Leonard says he is driven by a desire to help business owners achieve better IP outcomes. “Most businesses spend either too much or too little on IP. With economic recovery on the way, but likely to happen slowly, there’s a need for refined product and service differentiation and placement, as well as the necessity for businesses to protect their products and services as key competitive advantages.”

Innovative Billing Practices
To save clients’ time and money, Lowndes Associates Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys offers an innovative range of billing practices, such as fixed charges for patent drafting and discounts for prompt instructions and payment. The firm also offers savings on foreign filings by sourcing the best deals from good overseas firms.

Benefits
Experience: Experience working directly with and within multinational companies and large-scale start-up companies is rare in New Zealand, where few multinationals have headquarters or R&D facilities. Most NZ attorneys working for such firms are doing so under instructions from foreign attorneys.

Lowndes Associates Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys has direct experience with leading international firms, multinational companies, large-scale start-up companies and leading academic institutions. The firm’s people also have specialist experience working with complex technologies and business models.

Timeliness: The firm understands that services must be timely to be useful. Clients’ internal deadlines and project milestones are treated as seriously as intellectual property legal deadlines.

Cost: The firm offers clients strict control of costs. It offers innovative cost-saving service options and guarantees for predictable costs.

Support: The firm offers support services - such as IP training, commercialisation and IP management - to help clients get the best possible benefit from their intellectual property assets and from the firm’s core services.

International collaboration: The firm has excellent collaborative relationships with overseas firms to offer robust protection and innovative filing strategies. For example, it can arrange initial, priority applications to be filed in the UK or the US, at costs comparable to those of Australian and New Zealand applications, and can arrange significant cost savings for European applications.

A highly collaborative approach with clients, law firms, foreign agents and professional service providers, supports seamless services and a cost advantage internationally.
